Coronavirus in Scotland: 161 new Covid-19 cases in Scotland with no new deaths to report

The first minister gave an update on the latest coronavirus figures during her daily briefing.

Nicola Sturgeon revealed 161 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed across the country, with no new deaths recorded.

This means the country’s death toll still remains at 2,499 and she offered her condolences to those who have lost loved ones during the pandemic.

Of the 161 new cases, 65 were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 46 in Lanarkshire, 12 in the Lothians and 8 in Ayrshire and Arran.

The first minister also confirmed the R number – the average number of secondary infections produced by a single infected person – is “possibly as high as 1.5.”

The transition into phase four has been paused given the recent surge in confirmed cases.

During her daily briefing Ms Sturgeon said she is reimposing restrictions on social gatherings and limiting meet-ups to a maximum of six people between two households.

She also applied this rule to gatherings in pubs, cafes and restaurants – customers eating and drinking out have been asked to wear a mask when away from their table in a bid to prevent the virus spreading further.
