Edinburgh schoolgirl bakes up a treat to help dogs in need

An aspiring baker has been busy in the kitchen making sweet treats to raise money for pets abandoned during lockdown.

Helped by her baking assistant Otis the cocker spaniel Amber Redpath has designed dog-shaped biscuits to sell for charity.

Animal-loving Amber Redpath has been working round the clock at her home in Davidson’s Mains, developing her start-up business Amber’s Cookie Kitchen.

The social-enterprise combines the creative schoolgirl's favourite hobby of baking with her love of animals.

Helped by her baking assistant Otis the cocker spaniel Amber, 11, has designed dog-shaped biscuits to sell, all profits of which go to Edinburgh Dog and Care Home.

Amber said: “I have a passion for baking and started making cookies some time ago, everyone seemed to really like them so I thought it’s a good way to combine what I love doing with fundraising.

“It means everyone gets to eat lovely cookies and help out the animals so it’s a win-win for everyone.”

Delighted with the creative fundraising challenge Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home have thanked Amber for using her spare time to help the city’s vulnerable pets.

The charity's community fundraiser Hannah Ryan said: “The Home was thrilled to hear about Ambers Cookie Kitchen, having had most of our fundraising events cancelled for 2020, news like this puts a smile on everyone’s faces.

“After many years of cooking, I personally have trouble baking round cookies so I was impressed to see Amber with her dog-shaped cookies accompanied by her family dog.

“This is the essence of great community fundraising, finding something that you love and turning that into your fundraising event. Thank you so much Amber for all your support and passion.”

Amber has no plans to slow down and it busy in the kitchen making her next patch of dog-themed cookies.

She said: “There needs to be people out there who help animals and the cat and dog home do such great work so I decided to try and do something to help.”
