A dance studio in Edinburgh has called for pupils and others to take part in a dance tribute to NHS workers at 8pm on Thursday.

Louise Gibbs, a dance teacher at Dance@Studio21, has created a short Highland Dance routine for her students to perform as a tribute to NHS workers.

She shared a video tutorial of the routine on Facebook, and many students have vowed to learn it and perform the dance along with pipers playing Scotland The Brave on Thursday.

However, Ms Gibbs’ video has been shared much more widely than she expected, and many people have already learned the dance and sent in videos of themselves performing, often dressed up and wearing kilts.

She has so far received 25 videos from as far away as Australia and America.

“I set it up originally for my own dancer, but they’ve shared it with friends and friends of friends, and now it’s gone a bit mental,” said Ms Gibbs.

“We’re trying to advertise the fact that people can still do things together even though they’re not together.”

Some students will stream the dance via Facebook Live on Thursday, while some will perform in the street, at a distance from others.

Ms Gibbs was inspired to launch the project by the care she received from NHS midwives when giving birth to daughter Isla two weeks ago.

“They have to continue what they’re doing, they can’t do it over the phone,” she said.

“I’m in awe of them. They have to step up almost as birthing partners as they’re trying to limit the time visitors can be there.

“It was incredible how they managed it, they did everything you needed.”
