Moderna: Third coronavirus vaccine approved for use in the UK

The jab, developed by US-based company Moderna, has been shown to have a 94 per cent effectiveness against Covid-19.

The UK Government has ordered seven million doses of the new vaccine, with 10 million more to arrive by March.

The staggered roll-out is understood to be caused by the fact that while Moderna has manufacturing plants in Europe, they are not yet ready to begin distribution.

The jab, developed by US-based company Moderna, has been shown to have a 94 per cent effectiveness against Covid-19.

The drug, which was first approved in the United States, where the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) examined the results of a 30,000-volunteer study.

The UK was the first country in the world to approve the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, and has since also begun rollout of the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab.

Statistics released on Thursday revealed that 1.26 million jabs had been given in England, 113,000 in Scotland, 49,000 in Wales, and 46,000 in Northern Ireland.
