Nicola Sturgeon: 51 new coronavirus deaths in Scotland as cases rise by 958

Speaking at First Minister’s Questions, Ms Sturgeon confirmed that 51 more people had died from the virus in the last 24 hours.

It brings the total death toll of people who tested positive for Covid-19 to 3,848.

Confirmed cases of the virus have now reached 97,720, an increase of 958 on the day before.

The figure represents 4.3 per cent of people tested in Scotland in the last 24 hours.

The number of patients in hospital with confirmed or suspected coronavirus stands at 982 - nine fewer than yesterday.

Meanwhile, 69 people are being treated for the virus in Scotland’s intensive care units.

Ms Sturgeon said Scotland’s R number was “just below one”, meaning the infection rate is dwindling.

She added that the evidence suggested that restrictions across Scotland were having their “desired effect.”
