Nicola Sturgeon visits Western General Hospital ahead of coronavirus vaccine rollout

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon visited the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh this morning, ahead of the nationwide rollout of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine.

Ms Sturgeon met staff at the facility who will administer the jab to health workers and prioritised members of the public when the immunisation project begins tomorrow.

The First Minister thanked those who had worked to deliver the programme at short notice, calling her visit to the hospital “positive”.

In a tweet, Ms Sturgeon told followers: “Positive start to the day with a visit to the Western General in Edinburgh, where I met some of the staff who will administer, and receive, the first vaccinations against Covid tomorrow.

“My thanks to everyone working so hard to deliver this programme.”

The UK has ordered 40 million doses of the Pfizer jab, enough to vaccinate 20 million people, as people need to receive two doses, though there are just 800,000 doses in the first tranche.
