Level three of the tier system would mean alcohol sales both indoors and outdoors will not be permitted, although some restaurants may be able to open under strict conditions.

Reacting to the leaked information, Stewart Howie wrote on Facebook: "Appalling, if this is the case. Nothing is being done to challenge the real sources. How there can be 100’s of people crowded into IKEA but we can't have a meal out is a farce.”

Claudia Ana echoed this saying: “Open the restaurants at least!! They were following the guidelines and they were safe!!"

Tracey Mitchell took a similar stance to Mr Howie commenting: “Masses of restaurants closed in Edinburgh now but trampoline indoor parks open etc. It's a joke.”

Tomorrow, the Scottish government will lay out which areas will be subject to the new coronavirus 'tier' system in a parliamentary debate.

Some readers brought into question the logic behind the tier system, with Ian McWilliam writing on Facebook: “So Glasgow and Lanarkshire MUST be in tier four given the massive difference in infection rates."

Paddy Mcgivern said: “Surely this has to be breaching our human rights somewhere”.

MSP Miles Briggs took to twitter to share his disappointment at finding out this vital information via the media rather than directly from the Scottish Government. He tweeted: “This is not how communities across Scotland should be finding out this important information.”
