Chief Constable, Iain Livingstone, said during the coronavirus briefing today that people shouldn’t ‘chance it because you’re putting other people at risk.’

Scotland's Chief Constable has said that people shouldn't risk travelling in Scotland because 'you're putting others at risk'

He has said that people should not be travelling over the festive period, particularly between Scotland and parts of the rest of the UK.

He clarified: "Additionally, travel restrictions between local authority areas continue to apply and from Boxing Day, there will be increased a blanket travel ban right across the whole of mainland Scotland.”

He said that he has been clear that he doesn’t consider it appropriate for officers to “establish checkpoints and roadblocks to simply enforce these travel restrictions” but went on to say that people will see a doubling of operational presence on the roads as well as increased patrols across the whole country.

He said that these patrols will also continue to ensure road safety in general over the festive period, saying: “I underlined at a previous briefing the devastating consequences that drink and drug driving have had across many generations in Scotland and these patrols to prevent people travelling will also continue to ensure road safety.”

He continued: “Since March, the vast majority of people have done the right thing. I am hugely grateful for that support and I’m hugely grateful for that cooperation. All of us must continue to follow the rules.

"And as a result of that, I do expect the roads to be quieter than usual over the coming days.

"Taken together. This will mean greater police presence, and visibility, and thus greater potential engagement for citizens with police officers over the festive period, as we continue to support this public health emergency”
