EDINBURGH West MP Christine Jardine is calling on the UK Government to show its gratitude to foreign nationals working in the NHS during the Covid-19 crisis by granting them and their families indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

The Lib Dem home affairs spokeswoman has linked up with Labour MP David Lammy to lead a cross-party demand that “those who have put their lives at risk for our country should be welcome to live in it”.

Over 60 MPs have signed a letter to Home Secretary Priti Patel arguing foreign nationals in the NHS ought to have the right to settle.

Ms Jardine said many people on the frontline of the crisis were foreign nationals. “Our beloved NHS could not function and lives would be lost at this difficult time without their contribution. We’ve seen people’s enormous pride in the NHS.

Now the Government has a chance to show its own support for the people’s heroes by extending the right to remain to all the foreign national NHS workers fighting for our lives during the pandemic.”
