'We were over the moon': Edinburgh woman who celebrated her 100th birthday beats coronavirus

An Edinburgh care home resident has recovered from coronavirus, not long after celebrating her 100th birthday.

Betty Hurley, who lives in the Belgrave nursing home in Corstorphine, tested positive for Covid between Christmas and New Year.

Her daughter, Hazel, explained that they were devastated when they found out, saying: “We live in Manchester, so we couldn’t go and see her.

"We did ask, if the worst came to the worst, whether we could go to her, and they said of course.

"She’s had asthma for as long as I can remember, and she's had chest infections and things.

"The staff were incredible, they’ve been fantastic throughout, not just to mum, but to everyone.”

Betty tested negative for the virus this week.

She turned 100 in October, receiving her card from the Queen.

The pandemic has been hard for Hazel, as she lives in the North of England and travel restrictions prevent her from coming to Scotland.

However, she has been impressed with the staff at the home, who she has nothing but praise for.

She said: “The pandemic has been a huge worry, but the staff have been fantastic.

"They’ve done so well.

“I think they deserve recognition, they are so good.”

The UK has two vaccines that are being rolled out in all four nations, the Pfizer vaccine, and the Oxford vaccine, injections of which began last Monday.

The First Minister announced that as of Monday, January 11, 163,377 people in Scotland had received the coronavirus vaccine.

On Tuesday, Professor Jason Leitch asked people to be patient, saying: “Stay within the rules and we’ll get out faster.”
