Edinburgh doctor named one of the country’s ‘most dedicated’ healthcare professionals

The extensive volunteer work by a stalwart surgeon working in the Western General Hospital has been recognised at the Scottish Health Awards 2020.

Mhairi Collie works as a consultant colorectal surgeon in the Capital has won the Global Citizenship Award which recognises a healthcare professional dedicated to providing care in low and middle income countries.

Dr Collie was nominated for her work in Uganda, where she travels several times a year to help treat women who have sustained dreadful injuries during childbirth.

The heroic doctor helped set up the Uganda Childbirth Injury charity in 2001 and took over as Chair in 2018, dedicating her own time to providing high-quality medical care to vulnerable women.

Dr Collie was one of several winners whose achievements were celebrated across 16 diverse categories including the People’s Choice Award which was voted for by the public.

Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport Jeane Freeman MSP said: “The Scottish Health Awards continue to be an important opportunity to acknowledge and recognise the contribution that individuals and teams responsible for the delivery of our health and social care services continue to make to improving the health of our nation.

"This year has been a year like no other. Our colleagues across health and social care have demonstrated outstanding commitment, dedication and compassion in keeping people safe and providing care when we have needed it most.”

The 19th annual Scottish Health Awards, the most prestigious awards ceremony for professionals across NHS Scotland and their partners, were held virtually on Wednesday, December 9, 2020.
