Medics call for trauma action

the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has released a report calling for change to major trauma care in Scotland.

It says that death rates for people who have suffered severe trauma and are alive when reaching hospital is 40 per cent higher in the UK than in North America.

The study says that this is being addressed by changes in healthcare policy in England, but Scotland is lagging behind.

Ian Ritchie, vice-president of the RCS, said: “In general, trauma care in Scotland is of a very high standard, however, we can do better for those people who are very seriously injured.

“This report represents the beginning of a process.”
