Nicola Sturgeon: First Minister confirms one new coronavirus death as cases continue to rise

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed the latest coronavirus figures for Scotland.

Speaking at First Minister’s Questions in the Scottish Parliament, Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that one person has died after testing positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

In total, 2,495 people in Scotland have died after testing positive for Covid-19.

National Records of Scotland (NRS) has also published its weekly updates, which includes the deaths of people confirmed through a test, and also cases where Covid-19 is a suspected or contributory cause of death.

The latest update covers the week to Sunday, August 30, and shows that the total number of registered deaths stands at 4,228.

Six of those deaths were registered in the previous week, two of which were in care homes.

Coronavirus cases continue to rise

Since yesterday, a further 156 people have tested positive for the virus. It means the total now stands at 20,788.

On Tuesday, the Scottish Government reported 154 new cases of the virus as Ms Sturgeon announced the reintroduction of restrictions in the Glasgow area, where 66 cases were identified.

The number represents 1 per cent of all those tested in Scotland since yesterday.

This afternoon Ms Sturgeon confirmed that 86 more people in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde region had tested positive for the virus.

New cases in other regions of Scotland stood at:

•Lanarkshire - 26 new cases

•Lothian - 16 new cases

•Ayrshire - 6 new cases

Restrictions in Glasgow area

On Tuesday, the Scottish Government reported 154 new cases of the virus as Ms Sturgeon announced the reintroduction of restrictions in the Glasgow area, where 66 cases were identified.

From today, 800,000 people living in Glasgow, West Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire must not meet other households in indoor settings for the next two weeks.

The number of patients in hospital with confirmed or suspected coronavirus stands at 258 - six fewer than yesterday.

Five people are being treated for the virus in Scotland’s intensive care units, one fewer that yesterday.

Reacting to the latest figures, Ms Sturgeon said: “What we know is, unlike the public-based cluster in Aberdeen a few weeks ago, data so far suggests that transmission in the West of Scotland is happening - not exclusively - but mainly in people’s homes.”

Restrictions, she said, had not been reintroduced “lightly”.

“They are necessary, and we believe, proportionate,” she added.
