Edinburgh residents have expressed outrage as vast quantities of rubbish was dumped after the city enjoyed one of the hottest days of the year so far on Wednesday.

Author Ian Rankin posted pictures of the mess on Twitter this morning, which drew comments from radio star Boogie and TV presenter Lorraine Kelly, who said: “Ridiculous - so selfish - drives me nuts.”

Ruth Durie said: “Seriously, I know the council is skint, but could we crowdfund some litter wardens to hand out fines?”

Pam Blair Rawsthorne added: “What a disgusting mess to leave. What is wrong with people. You brought your stuff in a bag so what's so hard about putting back in the same bag and taking it home with you or put it in the buckets that are there and there's plenty to choose from. Come on people just have some respect for the place.”

Ken Johnston told that the issue was widespread: “It's not just the Meadows. Come down to East Lothian and see the mess left behind by "visitors" - including the soiled toilet paper.”

John Collins commented: “It’s not difficult to bag up your rubbish and find a bin after your day out or take it home and bin it. I mean come on this is our city so the least you can do is look after it and keep it tidy.”

Mel Young added: “Places were so much cleaner/tidier when folks were 'locked up' - part of me wants to go back to those times. The human race is a blight on the planet.”

Alan Ramsay said: “We hold various events and festivals in the Meadows. This wasn't even an event! It was just a hot day during social distancing. In all the years ive never seen anything like this! Utter pigs! Kids and dogs are going to get injured on broken glass and some poor folk are gonna have to clear up cans and bottles with other people’s saliva on them. Unbelievable!”

Gordon Smith commented: “This seems to be a UK thing. You hardly ever see this if you go abroad.. like has been commented before, leave it there and next time they can sit amongst the rubbish and whatever else has been left.”

Natalie Gordon said: “This has been going on for ages nothing new and it infuriating for people who use the Meadows daily not just when it's sunny!”

Rachel Edmonds added: “Always think you can tell everything you need to know about a person if they leave rubbish behind, the same types of people who don’t put their shopping trolley back after use/ just dump it in the car park for someone else to do. Lazy, dragged-up mingers!”

Louise Middleton said: “It has become like this everywhere. People also driving to dump and fly tip everywhere too. About time something was done about it.”
