Tourist Mekala Osborne struck down by killer bug in Vietnam well enough to fly home to East Lothian

A HOLIDAYMAKER from East Lothian who nearly died of pneumonia in Vietnam is well enough to fly home tomorrow, her family have confirmed.

Fitness instructor Mekala Osborne was given just a five percent chance of surviving the killer bug she contracted in September while in South East Asia.

But after surgery and a fundraising appeal from frantic friends and family, the 22-year-old can now make the mammoth trip back to the Capital.

“It’s been terribly worrying and really traumatic for us all," step-dad Jimmy, 64, from Prestonpans, told media last night. "Physically it’s been so draining just seeing her lying there linked up to various machines," added the taxi driver.

Mekala's symptoms started with a simple sore throat she treated with Strepsils before she rapidly deteriorated.

Mum Yvonne and Jimmy, were told to pray for Mekala by medics who put her in an induced coma.

Despite having a tracheotomy breathing tube and still on a ventilator, she will fly into the UK before being transferred to the Royal Infirmary.

Yvonne, 51, will travel by her side, as will hero medic who saved her - Dr Winston Jong, from the Mount Elizabeth Hospital, in Singapore.

Minibus driver Yvonne, 51, posted on Facebook: “All being well Mekala and I are will be home in two weeks.

"I hope to spend most of my day working with Mekala alongside the physio and her lovely nurses and doctors.

"Thank you to each and everyone of you who have supported and continue to support Mekala."

A JustGiving page set up for Mekala has since raised £12,000 - three times its £4,000 target.
