12 nostalgic photos showing Bonfire Night in Edinburgh down the years

Held annually on November 5, Bonfire Night has been a key date in the Scottish calendar for generations – but not this year.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and fears over social distancing, bonfires and firework displays have been cancelled across the country and Edinburgh is no different.

The city’s biggest display, which takes place at George Watson’s and pulls in huge crowds, has been axed altogether and even smaller displays are being cancelled.

Covid-19 restrictions in Scotland mean groups of up to six people from two households will be able to meet up with social distancing in place, but it’s a far cry from previous years when there were zero restrictions whatsoever.

Hopefully things can get back to normal in time for Bonfire Night in 2021.

We’ve had a dig through the archives to bring you twelve nostalgic memories of Bonfire Night in Edinburgh down the years.
