It was the era of Y2K, flip phones, body glitter, iPods, the internet, and cultural change worldwide. But closer to home Edinburgh’s high streets, clubs and days out have changed almost beyond recognition in the last 20 years.
Here are 13 random things we miss about the Scottish capital in the early 2000s.
1. HMV, Princes Street
The iconic music shop was arguably the best place to spend your Christmas money, but CD and record stores took a hit when streaming took over meaning HMV is no longer one of the main attractions of Princes Street Photo: TSPL
2. UCI Cinema
The 12-screen multiplex cinema at Craig Park (aka UCI 12, Fort Kinnaird) in Newcraighall Edinburgh opened in July 1990 and has now been taken over by Odeon Photo: TSPL
3. Whiplash Trash, Cockburn Street
The early 00s was the era of belly button and eyebrow piercings, but Cockburn Street became a little less dark and edgy when Whiplash Trash closed down Photo: TSPL
4. Commonwealth Pool
The top place for a Sunday swim, the slides at the Commie Pool were removed in 2000 but those of us who got a shot on them undoubtably remember the urban myth that there were razor blades embedded in the flumes! Photo: TSPL
