Nostalgia: Festival Cavalcade, 1984

ALL set to make a splash at the Festival Cavalcade were these bathing belles and a beach boy from the Blood Transfusion Service, who appeared on the front page of the Evening News on this day in 1984.

Their float – with the theme “Go on, take the plunge . . . become a blood donor” – was one of the colourful entries in the parade, which was set to give the Capital’s cultural bonanza a rousing curtain-raiser.

Donning the bloomers and boaters were Marysia Ferguson, Audrey Wilson, Colin McLennan, Caroline Tutt and Theresa Grant. Around 12,000 were expected to turn out for the Cavalcade, which was organised by the News.
