Top Gear 2020: when the new series starts on BBC Two, who the presenters are and where they visit

Everything you need to know about the 28th season of motoring mayhem

Top Gear’s intrepid - or inept - trio returned over Christmas for a one-off festive special that saw them dice with death as they explored Nepal in some unsuitable city cars.

Having survived that, it’s back to the studio, at least partially as a whole new series gets ready to kick off.

Here’s everything you need to know about series 28 of Top Gear.

When is Top Gear on?

The new series of Top Gear starts on Sunday, January 26 at 8pm on BBC2.

This series, the 28th since the show was reinvented and reborn in 2002, will feature six episodes.

Who are the presenters?

Following a few years of chopping and changing that saw the likes of Chris Evans, Matt LeBlanc and Rory Reid come and go the BBC seems to have settled on a presenting line-up it likes.

After a successful first series together journalist and racing driver Chris Harris returns alongside former cricketer Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff and TV host and comedian Paddy McGuinness.

What can we expect?

Sticking to a tried and tested format set out long before the current presenters turned up the new series of Top Gear is set to feature a mix of road trips, silly challenges, some fast cars being thrown around the test track by the Stig plus one or two special features.

The trio's American road trip takes them to Peru

Among the highlights of the coming series are an America road trip with a difference as the trio set out across the Andes in a Pontiac Trans-Am, a Dodge Dart, and a VW bus; a less glamourous run from Bognor Regis to Essex in three £600 convertibles; and Chris and Freddie attempting to complete the gruelling Baja 1000 - a 24-hour, 800-mile race across the Mexican desert.

On the track, Chris gets behind the wheel of Porsche’s first all-electric road car - the Taycan - as well as its record-breaking ID.R electric race car; Paddy tests the £120,000 BMW M8 and the team pit the McLaren Speetail against an RAF F35B Lighting jet.

To mark the 100th birthday of the sports car the trio team up with Damon Hill, Sabine Schmitz and the Stig on a Yorkshire road trip in a Porsche 911, Aston V8 Vantage and Ferrari Portofino.

And to celebrate one of Britain’s true motorsport legends, Chris takes to the woods in the actual Subaru Impreza used by Colin McRae when he became the first British World Rally Champion 25 years ago.

Plus the team bungee jump a Rover Metro, Paddy creates a budget alternative to the Land Rover Defender and they try to decide if a £70,000 Renault is better than a Lamborghini.
