Toyota GR Supra 2.0 brings less powerful, more dynamic model to UK range

Toyota has launched a new entry-level version of its GR Supra sports car in the UK, featuring a downsized engine, retuned chassis and 100kg of weight savings.

The GR Supra 2.0 introduces a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine in place of the original 3.0-litre straight six. With 254bhp and 255lb ft of torque, the 2.0 is around 80bhp/73lb ft down on the 3.0-litre version but its 0-62mph time has increased by less than a second - 5.2 seconds compared to the larger motor’s 4.4 seconds. Top speed remains the same for both cars at an electronically limited 155mph.

Like the 3.0-litre, the GR Supra 2.0 sends its power to the rear wheels via an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission with manual override via steering wheel paddles.

While it is down on power, Toyota says the 2.0 is more dynamic to drive than the larger engined model thanks to a lower weight, better weight distribution and a retuned chassis.

The 2.0-litre model is 100kg lighter than the six-cylinder engine and is physically shorter, meaning the car’s weight is shifted rearward for a perfect 50:50 weight balance.

To suit the changes in weight, the Supra’s chassis has been overhauled, with changes to the adaptive variable suspension, springs and dampers, limited-slip differential and electric power steering to sharpen the car’s handling.

“To achieve agile steering and stable cornering, we worked very hard to reduce the new car’s weight, while aiming for a 50:50 weight balance,” said GR Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada. “This presented us with huge challenges, but we did not want to compromise on our targets.”

The GR Supra 2.0 costs from £45,995 - £7,000 less than the 3.0 - and comes in a single Pro trim level. This features 18-inch alloy wheels, the adaptive suspension, LSD and sports brakes as standard along with an 8.8-inch touchscreen display, wireless phone charging and heated sports seats. Toyota’s comprehensive Safety+ driver aid package is also standard.

To mark its arrival in the UK 45 special Fuji Speedway Edition cars are being offered at £47,395. These feature a unique white metallic paint finish, 19-inch matt back alloy wheels and red door mirror housings. In the cabin there are carbon fibre dashboard trim inserts and red leather and black Alcantara upholstery.

Order books are now open, with first deliveries expected later this month.
