The availability and quality of gluten free (GF) options have improved in recent years – but there is still a way to go.
While the majority of restaurants will clearly mark out vegan and vegetarian options nowadays, this is not always the case with GF. But, luckily there are some Edinburgh eateries which go the extra mile to cater to those who can’t eat gluten.
We asked readers on the Edinburgh Evening News Facebook page and Best In Edinburgh group their recommendations for the best restaurants serving gluten free food in Edinburgh. This is what they said.

5. Apiary
"A delight," said one reader about Apiary Restaurant in Newington Road, "Almost everything was GF". The whole menu at this modern restaurant, including desserts, is 99 per cent gluten free. The same goes for their sister restaurants Three Birds and Educated Flea. Photo: Apiary Restaurant Facebook

6. Topolabamba
Topolabamba in Lothian Road serves Mexican street food on small plates for sharing. Its menu points out dishes which are not gluten free, which are only a handful of items. So you can tuck into their tacos, tostadas, taquitos, chimichangas and more without worrying. Photo: Topolabamba Facebook

7. Noto
Noto is a Michelin Guide independent restaurant in Thistle Street, New Town, which is focused on small sharing plates packed with flavour. There are a number of quality gluten free options available here, with knowledgeable waiting staff, and they even make their own gluten free bread. Photo: Contributed

8. Union of Genius
Describing itself as Scotland's "first and best" soup café, Union of Genius can be found in Forrest Road, or out and about in their vintage caravan. As well as a tasty variety of soups, including gluten free options, they also do GF cakes and meal pots which can be delivered to your home. Photo: Google Streetview
