Watch as we try out the viral SpudBros baked potato at new Edinburgh Lothian Road shop

Taste test at SpudBros in Edinburgh city centre

There was clearly a lot of hype around the opening of SpudBros’ first Scottish shop in Edinburgh’s Lothian Road on Wednesday.

The queue snaked down the road and around the corner, with one man having waited patiently for 13 hours for the shop to finally open its doors.

It was certainly a special occasion, with celebrations galore to mark the viral business finally putting down roots in Scotland.

The family business from Preston claims to be bringing a taste of Lancashire north of the border, with all locally sourced ingredients from in and around their hometown.

I’ve had baked potatoes before, of course, but I had never tried one of the famous baked tatties which have earned SpudBros millions of likes, views and followers on social media. That is, until today.

I thought it was wise to ask for a recommendation from one of the SpudBros himself, Jacob Nelson, who co-owns the business with his brother Harley. And so I found myself ordering the ‘Jacob Special’.

This baked potato is a variation of the standard Garlic Chili Chicken baked potato on the menu, but loaded with coleslaw, cheese and other tasty treats, as well as SpudBros’ special Tram Sauce, a delicious addition with a slow burning kick which catches you a bit off guard as you make your way through the tasty spud.

Crispy onions create a lovely crunch, with the ingredients mixing perfectly to create a taste sensation, and a wholesome eat, sure to fill anyone up to the brim.

And while I’m used to baked potatoes being more of a lunch treat, the baked potatoes on offer at SpudBros are incredibly filling and more of a dinner-sized portion than just a quick bite for lunch - something Jacob was keen to emphasise when he prepared his Jacob Special baked potato for me.

This particular baked potato was indeed special, and it most certainly won’t be my last.

I still can’t believe that a baked potato can be so tasty and filling, and now I see why the Nelson brothers’ growing business has been a viral sensation, with their social media content also connecting with younger customers.
