Blooming plant biz started in lockdown sparks 'walk the stalk' trend

A woman who started a plant business during lockdown hopes to spark a new exercise trend, by getting people to take their plants for a walk in the rain.

Megan Laughlin took a seed of an idea and turned it into the Beanstalk Plant Co from her Gorgie flat, after her job in events came to an end during lockdown.

Now the young entrepreneur is encouraging plant owners to take a stroll with their plants in tow or ‘walk the stalk’ as a fun way to keep-fit during winter months.

She said: “During lockdown when I worked from home the greenery in my flat played a big part in keeping me calm and sane. I wanted to make the world of indoor plants more accessible to everyone and make them a little less daunting for any first-time plant parents out there.

“As we move into winter and restrictions are still with us, walking the stalk will give people even more of an incentive to go out for a good walk in the rain, keeping themselves fit, saving water from the tap and giving their plants the best watering they could get."

She added: “Gardening experts say that rainwater is always best for plants and many gardeners harvest water in barrels for this. But that’s no good for my customers, most live in flats like me and don’t have window boxes or large window-sills to sit their plants on when it is wet. So what I suggest is from time to time that they take their plants for a walk in the rain.”
