As spring begins, many of us will be looking to freshen up our homes with new furniture, decor and accessories.

However, under the current lockdown restrictions major homeware and furniture stores like Ikea are classed as non-essential and remain closed, meaning that many of us are having to wait it out or rely on home deliveries.

However, on 16 March, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon outlined the updated schedule for lifting and easing lockdown restrictions and this included non-essential homeware stores.

Here is everything you need to know about IKEA reopening, and what services the store offers in the meantime.

When will IKEA reopen after lockdown?

According to Nicola Sturgeon’s latest update, IKEA and other homeware stores, and garden centres on 5 April.

Sturgeon said there will be a phased reopening of retail stores, which will see homeware stores and garden centres reopen before clothes shops and other non-essential retail.

At her briefing in parliament, Sturgeon said: “We expect to begin the phased re-opening of non essential retail on 5 April.

“Click and collect retail services will be permitted to reopen from that date, along with homeware stores, and car showrooms and forecourts.

“Garden centres will also be able to reopen on 5 April – which I know is important as we head towards the summer.

“From 26 April...we expect all remaining retail premises to re-open.”

Your purchase needs to be made online, then you can opt for home delivery or contactless collection.

An email will instruct you on how to collect your goods. Pick up points are dependent on each store, but are always located on the store’s sight.

The stores are also offering a 365-day returns policy, to ensure customers can return any unwanted goods when stores reopen.

IKEA also offers an online planning service, for anyone struggling to rejuvenate their homes or design a new IKEA kitchen or built-in wardrobe without being able to visit the store.

An IKEA specialist will book you in for an online consultation and then you can design your room or space with their expert advice.

Will the IKEA cafe open in line with stores reopening?

For all those who really just visit IKEA for a plate of meatballs or a hotdog, you may need to wait a while longer.

While homeware stores can reopen on 5 April, cafes and restaurants do not reopen until three weeks later.

Hospitality is allowed to resume from 26 April, at which point you can enjoy hot food from the IKEA cafe as a dine-in guest.
