Restaurant review: Voujon, Newington Road

IS VOUJON the best Bengali and Indian restaurant in Edinburgh? Well, it is certainly a front runner. Voujon is a popular restaurant, located on Edinburgh’s Southside.

It’s not often you can describe an Indian restaurant as “stylish” – even “chic” – but you’ll find Voujon to be both.

Fortunately, the contemporary decor does not extend to the menu, which is generous portions of traditional Bengali cuisine, albeit it with influences from both east and west.

First impressions do not disappoint. The new interior is warm and inviting, with the walls offset by soft lighting.

The contemporary feel is carried through to the menus and tableware The atmosphere was lively and many of the patrons appeared to be regulars. Service from the friendly and attentive staff was excellent throughout our meal.

The new menu promises “a symbiotic fusion of traditional recipes, laced with influences from realms of both east and west”. There is also an extensive wine list as well as a range of Williams Scottish beers and selection of spirits.

I started with the meat Samosa, deep fried savoury pastries containing minced lamb served with a special sauce and accompanied by a salad. My companion plumped for the Murgh Chatt, small pieces of chicken cooked with tomatoes and cucumbers in a delicious hot and sour sauce.

For main courses, I chose Kazi Eesa, whole king prawns in their shells, cooked in the most delicious spicy sauce, with cubed green peppers, onions, chilli, fresh ginger and coriander accompanied with a naan. My partner enjoyed Kashmiri Murghi – a Voujon special which comprises chicken in a mild sauce with fresh mixed tropical fruits and exotic spices giving a sweet tasting surprise

Portions for both starters and main courses were very generous so we decided to finish off our meal with coffees and after dinner mints although the dessert menu was truly enticing.

Before you leave ask about the “handicook” evenings to be held next year, when a special menu is cooked by female members of owner Salim Miah’s family the way it traditionally happens in the home. As you might expect with Indian food, there are plenty vegetarian options.
