An independent business in Leith has pledged to stay true to the community’s motto of “persevere” as it forges ahead with the launch of its latest product range.

By refusing to delay the introduction of two new tartans, Kilt Society owner Fergus Macdonald hopes to demonstrate that Leith can show resilience in hardship, as it has in the past.

“While we understand that socialising events are cancelled, our products can still be ordered online for future events,” says Fergus. “I’m so proud to launch these new tartans which send a message of togetherness and encouragement that we can all share.”

The business, specialising in highland wear for the modern man, started with Fergus Macdonald selling sporrans out of his bedroom while at university. In 2016, with the help of his wife, Emma, Kilt Society was officially established alongside their other brand, The Tartan Blanket Co.

Their ethos, “wear it the way you want,’’ encourages men to choose their way of wearing a kilt or trews without the limitations of traditional outfit “rules”. They’re all about looking to the past to inspire the present and finding ways to merge Scottish tradition and contemporary living.

As the latest additions to the globally popular Persevere range, the Douglas Weathered tartan embodies faded earthy green, brown and blue tones, while the Persevere Moss Navy combines blues and greys.

Both are available in kilts, trews, ties and flashes for adults and children. On the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak, Fergus adds: “A lot has happened in the last few weeks. As a husband, father and business owner it can be hard to see the path forward and make sense of it all. But one guiding principle stays with me – we will persevere and come out stronger.

“Now more than ever the spirit of Persevere helps bring us together as a global community to stand strong and help each other get through tough times.”
