Pursue a career that really makes an impact
Working as a nurse allows you to be a driving force to improve the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities in Scotland and beyond.
And becoming a learning disability nurse means you really could make a difference to someone’s life, according to Jacqueline Taylor, Lecturer in Learning Disabilities Nursing at ENU.
As many as nine in ten people with learning disabilities have some form of communication need, which can make it harder for them to report how they’re feeling.
“You have to be really creative with your thinking as a result,” says Jacqueline. “You have to be a kind of detective if someone is unable to tell you verbally what’s going on then. You might just uncover something small, but it can make a really massive difference to the health outcomes of someone with a learning disability as well as to their day-to-day comfort.”
A learning disability nurse is there to ensure people with learning disabilities have access to healthcare, she explains. “People with learning disabilities experience a lot of health inequalities for lots of different reasons, so we have a major role to play in making sure they can access the health services that they need.
“People with learning disabilities die, on average, about 20 years before the general population and when they do, they have between seven and ten existing health conditions. A big part of our role is identifying people’s health needs in the first instance, or helping them identify their health needs, then making sure they can be supported to have those needs addressed.”
Why study nursing at Edinburgh Napier University?
This is Scotland’s only university to offer all four nursing specialisms and midwifery in some of the best training facilities in the country. The university’s School of Health and Social Care at its Sighthill Campus offers life-like hospital wards, a home setting and even a midwifery suite.
Immersive environments and the latest technologies are used to help train the next generation of nurses at the Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre, where features include a critical care unit with adjoining technology control room, an accident and emergency bay, and three clinical wards. There are even real patients who volunteer to give students the chance to learn how to use techniques on real members of the public.
“Nationally, all nursing students spend about half their time on placement in clinical settings, which is why the confidence they develop through the clinical skill practice and immersive simulation scenarios we provide is so important,” says Cathal Breen, Professor of Simulation and Clinical Skills.
Edinburgh Napier University’s Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre also boasts a unique home setting for simulation scenarios to support home healthcare called SHELTER, where allied health professions and all fields of nursing can learn and practice interdisciplinary skills in a safe location.
What if I already have a degree?
If you have already earned your undergraduate degree in any subject, you can qualify as an adult nurse at Edinburgh Napier University in just two years.
Postgraduate pre-registration courses are available directly from ENU, with places available to start in September 2024 for a Master's in Adult Health or you can study to become a mental health nurse.
There is also a wealth of options available in allied health: you can sign up for a Master of Social Work Programme, join the Physiotherapy (pre-registration) MSc or register for the MSc (pre-registration) Occupational Therapy programme.
Plus the brand-new MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology launches this September, offering the chance to kickstart a career that responds to a direct need within the NHS.
What else makes ENU so special?
A huge draw for prospective students is the team effort involved in all health and social care courses. Students benefit from inter-disciplinary practice with academics across different subjects working together to ensure you get a real-life perspective on how the different disciplines interact in the workplace.
There are great opportunities to pursue your chosen career after you finish your studies too: 100 per cent of all postgraduate students at the School of Health and Social Care are in work or further study after 15 months.
Plus, Edinburgh Napier University was named Top Modern University in Scotland for Research Power and Impact in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 results.
