2000 apply to be drivers on borders rail link

RAIL bosses have been bombarded with more than 2000 job applications from would-be train drivers – all competing for just 18 posts.

ScotRail advertised the trainee roles on the new £300 million Borders Railway and was swamped with 2229 CVs by January’s deadline.

Applicants have a one-in-123 chance of landing one of the coveted positions on the 35-mile track  linking Waverley with the Borders.

The railway is set to be completed next year, although it is not expected to be operational until summer  2015.

Christine Grahame, MSP for Midlothian South, said the high interest from applicants was a good sign.

She said: “They are very attractive jobs – people want to be involved in a new project with a national profile such as this.

“The positions carry a bit of kudos – it will be great to say you drive a train for a living.”

The posts have a starting salary of £22,281, rising to £39,204 after training is completed.

The advert explained that successful candidates will have to be wary of various elements, including “foliage”.

A ScotRail spokeswoman said: “The selection process has begun and the first recruits will begin their training in late spring.”
