The German supermarket giant’s inexpensive French red beat bottles more than double its price tag.

The victorious vino won the gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards, scoring 95/100 in a blind taste test.

Lot 23 Minervois La Liviniere 2015, is part of the “Lot” series Aldi brought in two years ago. It is compiled of a series premium wines from around the world and has been well received by critics.

Judges said the syrah blend tasted of “superb fruit and toasted oak,” further describing it as “inky, dark and intense.”

Their Maynard’s 10 Year Old Tawny Port, also only a tenner, won a gold award as well.

The supermarket took home 17 awards in total. The cache comprises of the two golds, four silvers, nine bronzes and two commendations.

Aldi’s managing director, Tony Baines said: “We’re thrilled our Lot Series is popular with customers and also recognised for its quality.”

The store has won a slew of awards in recent years, including 207 from the drinks industry in 2015.

This most recent triumph follows the retail giant snatching the Multiple Wine Retailer of the Year award at The Drinks Retailing awards and Drinks Retailer of the Year at The Drinks Business awards.

Aldi also won 16 awards at the International Wine and Spirits challenge including 7 silver medals and 9 bronzes.

This brings the supermarket’s full tally to 138 awards this year so far for their alcoholic drinks alone.
