Cihan Ergisi, 35, from Edinburgh made a brief appearance in private at Edinburgh Sheriff Court before Sheriff Gail Patrick.
No plea or declaration was made and the case was continued for further inquiry. Ergisi was released on bail.
His appearance in court follows an alleged sexual attack on a 21-year old woman in Eyre Place, Edinburgh, on October 8.
