Muirhouse fire: Baby rescued after blaze destroys block of flats in Edinburgh

Those in the building at the time are safe but their home has been completely destroyed by this morning’s blaze

A baby and four adults have been rescued from a burning block of flats in Edinburgh after a severe fire tore through the roof of the building.

Emergency services were called to the four-storey property on Ferry Gait Place in the Muirhouse area shortly after 10am on Thursday September 10.

Six fire engines were dispatched to the scene, with crews spending two hours tackling the blaze. The fire left the building's exterior severely charred and the roof destroyed.

Firefighters rescued four adults and an infant from one property as flames and smoke billowed from the building.

The entire block was evacuated, and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) advised residents in neighbouring properties to keep their windows and doors closed while the incident was dealt with.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 10.07am to attend a building fire at Ferry Gait, Edinburgh. Two ambulances, two special operations response teams (SORT), a paramedic response car and a critical care paramedic were dispatched. Five patients were assessed and discharged at the scene.”

A local resident, whose partner called the fire service after spotting the initial smoke, said the flames erupted from the roof just minutes later, prompting fears that the building could collapse. They added that neighbours remained concerned about pets left inside the evacuated properties.

The resident said: “It was pretty shocking. Nothing like this happens around here and it tends to be pretty quiet.

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed that officers are now making enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fire.

“I suppose it’s lucky that it happened during normal school and working hours.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed that officers are now making enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fire.

An SFRS spokesperson confirmed that all other properties within the building were safely evacuated and that the casualties had been handed over to the care of paramedics.
