Banned driver caught driving past police station using mobile

A BANNED driver was collared after police officers leaving their station spotted him driving while using his mobile phone.

Martin Mya was just passing Musselburgh police station when the two officers decided to pull him over after catching him with the phone in his hand.

And when the officers stopped Mya, from Edmonstone Road, Danderhall, their inquiries led them to find out the phone user was also driving illegally.

Mya had taken his partner’s vehicle without her consent and subsequently was driving the car with no full licence and no insurance.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard the police officers were leaving the station in their vehicle at around 12.40pm when they saw the accused and pulled him into a nearby car park.

Mya claimed he had taken the car as he was “late for work and in a bit of a rush” but gave no valid reason for using his mobile while driving.

Sheriff Thomas Welsh fined the 27-year-old scaffolder a total of £400 and banned him from driving for six months.

Mya, who represented himself during Wednesday’s court appearance, admitted to taking and driving away a vehicle from his home address on November 16 last year.

He also pleaded guilty to three further charges of driving while disqualified and driving with no insurance or licence at Dalrymple Loan, Musselburgh, on the same date.
