EDINBURGH is the most booked-out destination to bring in the New Year - but is trailed by smaller towns before other big cities.

Data provided by TripAdvisor Rentals shows the capital is the number one choice for people renting holiday accommodation in Scotland.

But Inverness and Aviemore come out next, before Glasgow features.

They are followed by St Andrews, Anstruther, North Berwick, Fort William, Elie and Rothesay, according to the report which says ‘cosy’ trumps city life.

The rankings are based on booking demand for New Year’s between 29th December 2017 to 2nd January 2018.

Laurel Greatrix, spokesperson for TripAdvisor Rentals, said: “Thanks to its iconic Hogmanay, it’s no surprise holidaymakers flock to Edinburgh for New Year’s, but, with celebrations aplenty, holidaymakers can enjoy a memorable New Year’s in any of the charming Scottish towns on our list.”
