Capital pub teams lose out in cross-border quiz battle

AN international match pitting the best brains from quiz teams in Edinburgh and the north-east of England against each other has been held in the Capital.

Four local teams, consisting of regulars from pub quizzes all over Edinburgh took on three teams that travelled up from Newcastle and Sunderland.

The quiz match, held at the Grange cricket club, saw each team face 60 identical questions, before the top team from each region played-off in a 32-question head-to-head.

And eventually it was the England team who lifted the Jim Brunton Shield, named in memory of a former Scotsman newspaper quiz compiler.

The winning team included Dave Taylor, a retired transport manager who has been playing in the Sunderland Quiz League for 40 years, has been a winner on Eggheads and Brain of Britain and recently won the maximum of eight programmes in a row on Countdown.

He said: “The standard of the answering was excellent and I was lucky enough to be part of a team who were able to answer the most correctly.”
