Charity lands UFO for seal rescue record

A RECORD number of injured seals have been rescued in Scotland this winter, the Scottish SPCA has revealed.

The charity rescued its 99th injured pup, which has been named UFO, on Christmas Day, when it was collected from Musselburgh. The 100th seal was rescued on Boxing Day from Eyemouth. The seals are now being cared for in Fife.

The Fife centre only saw 75 seals in 2010 and it is thought bad weather has been a factor in the increased numbers this year, with pups being bashed against rocks.

Colin Seddon, centre manager of the Scottish SPCA’s wildlife rescue centre at Middlebank, in Dunfermline, said: “He [UFO] is underweight and has minor wounds from hitting against rocks.”
