Firefighters in protective suits rushed to the pool in Prestonpans, East Lothian, after a spillage of chemicals used to treat pool water was reported by staff at around 6am this morning.

No members of the public were present and no-one was hurt.

The chemicals were reported to have leaked from a drum in one of the pool store rooms.

The drum was removed to a safe area by a team of firefighters, who were decontaminated afterwards.

A spokeswoman for the Mercat Gait Centre said they were hopeful the pool would open later.

The incident comes after a £20,000 fine was handed down to health firm Virgin Active after an accident in 2010, when chemicals were accidentally mixed at a club in Edinburgh.
