City firm to refit church

Developer Carlton Group, which is based in the Capital, is to carry out a unique renovation project to convert an empty church into a crematorium.

Houndwood Church, which was built in the 1830s, heard its last sermon in 2003 and has been empty ever since. But now it is to be restored with pews in the nave, a pulpit and lectern, to allow religious services to return, and a memorial garden will be created.

The church is near Grantshouse in the Borders.
