Council to undertake 'remedial works' at Davidson's Mains roundabout amid persistent flooding

Length improvement works were undertaken at Davidson’s Mains roundabout earlier this year, concluding in August

Edinburgh council has said that “remedial works” are set to be carried out in Davidson’s Mains after an area of pavement has been plagued by flooding during heavy rain despite works to improve the surface only just being completed.

Local residents have voiced their concerns over flooding seen on Main Street at the roundabout junction with Quality Street and Cramond Road South.

City of Edinburgh Council undertook work to improve the road and pavement area at Davidson’s Mains roundabout earlier this year, which concluded in August.

However, despite the newly-surfaced pavement being in place, flooding has still been seen in the area including during Friday’s Storm Austen downpour.

The Evening News was told that the Chest Heart & Stroke charity shop, located on Main Street, was forced to close for a number of hours on Friday morning (October 23) due to flooding, with some volunteers sent home during the disruption.

While the shop was eventually reopened after drains were cleared, it marks the latest in a long line of flooding incidents in which the pavement outside the store has been submerged underwater.

Local councillor Lewis Younie branded the flooding “dangerous and damaging”, adding that the council had “let these folk down again”.

The Lib Dem councillor for the Almond ward said: “'Residents and shopkeepers in Davidson's Mains have been let down again and again - dangerous and damaging flooding occurring which should not be having this impact on the community.

“The council knew there was a flooding problem here, and knew what work was urgently needed. It is sorely disappointing that they have let these folk down again.

“They cannot keep avoiding their responsibilities to protect businesses and residents, especially when they are aware of the problem.”

Fellow Lib Dem local councillor Louise Young added: “After months of disruption from the construction works, residents and local businesses should not be facing into such severe flooding.

“After previous severe rains created flooding that closed businesses and ruined stock and furnishings, the Council had an obligation to fix the issues that arose from those works.

“The delays mean locals are again anxious and rightly angry that they are facing into this yet again. Urgent action is needed to address this before further any incidents.”

In response to complaints about the pavement and persistent flooding issues, Transport and Environment Convener Councillor Stephen Jenkinson said: “I’m very sorry to hear about the flooding in Davidson’s Mains, I understand how disruptive this is for residents and businesses.

“Council teams have removed the leaves that were blocking the drainage system, and the water is now free flowing again. Our road sweeper will also be out this afternoon to sweep up all the leaves in and around the roundabout and will do the same again tomorrow.

“We have identified remedial works which we are hoping to carry out in November to prevent this from happening again.”
