The grey Seat Leon crashed into the property at the corner of Stevenson Drive at Stenhouse Cross, at around 9:30pm on Thursday.

An eye-witness working in a business across the street last night told the Edinburgh Evening News they saw the vehicle “speeding” past before hearing a “loud bang.”

They described seeing about four or five men leaving the scene along Stevenson Drive and pictures taken in the aftermath show the car resting up against the building and a large crack in the wall.

Police said no one one was hurt as a result but inquiries are ongoing to trace those who were in the car.

The eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said: “It was really lucky no one was walking past at the time because if you were hit, you would be lucky to survive.”

The property concerned is close to three other shops - including a convenience store and takeaway - and there is a bus stop just yards away.

One local resident told the Evening News that he was shocked to hear about the incident from a delivery driver last night.

The man said: “I could have been taking my wee boy round there - I was going to go round to the shops as well but thank god I didn’t. If someone had been walking on the pavement there, that would have been it.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We received reports that a car had collided into a property on Stevenson Drive, Edinburgh, around 9.40pm on Thursday, 31 December 2020.

"Officers attended, nobody was injured and enquiries are ongoing to trace those who were in the car."

Pictures from the scene showed the car resting against the building with the driver side door open, police tape around the area and a metal railing lying on the ground which appeared to have been mowed down by the car.

Images taken on New Year’s Day also showed that the area outside the property had been cordoned off.
