A crack cocaine addict who left a frail pensioner with a broken hip during a handbag robbery has been jailed for two years.

Daniel Munro dragged the 82-year-old woman to the ground before grabbing her handbag and running off following the violent assault in Leith, Edinburgh.

The thug targeted his frail and elderly victim from behind and ripped the bag from her grasp as the OAP bravely tried to fight him off.

The woman was rushed to hospital after passers-by raised the alarm and she was treated for a broken hip sustained during the robbery.

Police officers managed to identify 34-year-old Munro from local CCTV footage and he was later traced and arrested in February this year.

Munro was remanded in custody last month appeared via a video link for sentencing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

Sheriff Thomas Welsh QC said Munro had carried out “a serious assault on a vulnerable woman” and jailed him for 24 months.

The sheriff also sentenced Munro to be supervised for 12 months following his release from prison.

Defence agent Nicola Haston said: “The root of his problem is drugs and he is looking for help to come off drugs, namely crack cocaine.”

Previously the court heard the elderly victim was making her way home when she was attacked at the city’s Hamburgh Place at around 4.25pm on February 8 this year.

Fiscal depute Alan Wickham said the woman “was grabbed from behind and dragged to the ground” by Munro.

The pensioner valiantly attempted to keep hold of her belongings but her attacker managed to wrench the bag from her grasp and ran off.

A witness ran to the injured woman’s aid and called the police and an ambulance.

The victim was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where it was found she had suffered a fractured hip during the assault.

Munro pleaded guilty to assaulting the 82-year-old woman by seizing her handbag and struggling with her causing her to fall to the ground all to her severe injury and rob her of a handbag and its contents at Hamburgh Place, Edinburgh, on February 8 this year.
