The insulting words have been sprayed on a building in Cables Wynd and have been there since Saturday, 6 February.

One resident from the area said he believes the vandalism was targeted at one particular tenant after he allegedly used the wrong bin near the property and has called for it to be removed immediately.

The message, which has been sprayed in huge writing either side of a door to the entrance of the property, reads: “Scum use own bin” following by a racist slur.

Locals took to social media after a photo of the graffiti was shared online condemning the person responsible and labelling it as a hate crime.

Others complained about the “lack of action” shown by councillors in the area to get it removed quickly.

Labour councillor for Leith Gordon Munro said he was horrified to see the racist act after a picture of the graffiti was shared with him on Wednesday.

He said: “This is not Leith. This is a response by an individual who clearly has personal issues which they need to seek counselling for rather than vandalise Leith with their racist bile.”

A sticker saying ‘police aware’ has been put next to the graffiti writing.

A police spokesman said: “Around 9.10pm on Saturday, 6 February, we received a report of offensive graffiti on Cables Wynd in Edinburgh.

“An investigation is ongoing and relevant partners have been notified to get the graffiti removed.”
