Motorists have been caught speeding and driving uninsured cars in the centre of Edinburgh.

Drivers breaking the law were pulled over in areas regularly used for walking and cycling.

Officers said they caught several motorists speeding and two were stopped for driving uninsured vehicles.

In a statement police said they are cracking down on speeding in places were people enjoy running, walking and cycling during lockdown to keep the public safe.

A police spokesman posted on Twitter: “Local officers were active in central Edinburgh over the weekend helping create safe spaces for people walking, running and riding bikes.

“Several people driving cars were dealt with for speeding and two reported for no insurance. #SlowDownForLockdown #Covid19.”

Police in Edinburgh have said they stopped around 200 cars during speed checks this week.

Officers posting on Twitter said they were carrying out speed checks for #SlowDownForLockdown in areas where communities have raised concerns for safety.
