Edinburgh’s courts dished out sentences in May for crimes including murder, serious sexual assaults and historic sexual abuse. Among the other criminals sentenced at the Capital’s courts last month was a drunk lout who caused a disturbance and assaulted staff at an Edinburgh city centre coffee shop, who was ordered to carry out unpaid work.
And, a man was jailed after attempting to murder a young child and another man at a high-rise block of flats in Edinburgh by setting fire to a front door. While, a 29-year-old man was sentenced to four years in prison for a serious sexual assault on a Edinburgh woman.

5. Man jailed for series of domestic abuse offences
Brian Taylor, 54, was sentenced to nine years in prison on May 23 after being convicted of a series of domestic abuse offences in the Edinburgh area. He was found to have committed violent crimes over a 15-year period. Police said Taylor ‘showed no remorse for his violent and abusive behaviour.’ He was previously found guilty of eight charges following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. Detective Inspector Mhairi Cooper of the Edinburgh Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit said: "It is incredibly difficult for someone to confront their abuser and I would like to commend the women for their bravery in coming forward during the investigation. Their information was crucial in helping us build the case against him, and I hope this outcome provides them with some sense of closure." | Police Scotland Photo: Police Scotland

6. Jailed for child protection offences
A 29-year-old woman was sentenced to four years in prison at the High Court in Edinburgh on May 28 in connection with child protection offences. Lyndsay Lawrence was convicted at the High Court in Edinburgh on Friday, 19 April, 2024. She was found guilty of the assault to severe injury and danger to life, and of wilfully exposing a person under 16 years in a manner likely to cause them unnecessary suffering or injury. The offences were committed in the Falkirk area in December, 2020 when she was looking after a nine-month-old baby boy. 7. Jailed for historical sexual abuse
A man who carried out a series of horrific sex attacks on children and adults over a 35 year period was sentenced on May 30 to an extended six year jail period. David Corcoran sexually abused a six-year-old boy at an address in Edinburgh between February 1987 and September 1988. The 54-year-old also abused a teenage boy at a home in the capital in 2008 and was found to have attacked a woman by dragging and pinning her to the ground with the intention of raping her at an address at the city’s Wester Hailes area in 2016. A sheriff described the savage attacks as “sustained and repeated” and his actions had “caused great suffering and distress” to his victims. Corcoran, of Carmuir, South Lanarkshire, denied the allegations but was found guilty of 11 charges following a four day trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court in April. | Police Scotland Photo: Police Scotland

8. Starbucks attack
On May 31, a drunk lout who caused a disturbance and assaulted staff at an Edinburgh city centre coffee shop was ordered to carry out unpaid work. David McCandless, 52, turned up at the Starbucks outlet at the city’s Princes Street and made his way to the front counter at around 8.55pm on December 16 last year. Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard two staff members and five customers were present when McCandless “appeared to be intoxicated” and his presence made the employees “uncomfortable”. The staff were said to have been left “feeling threatened” by McCandless’s aggressive behaviour and he was arrested after the police were contacted. Sheriff Charles Walls sentenced McCandless to carry out 70 hours of unpaid work in the community as punishment. McCandless pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner and refusing to leave the premises at Starbucks, Princes Street, Edinburgh, on December 16 last year. He also admitted to assaulting an employee by repeatedly pushing him on the body during the same incident. | Alexander Lawrie Photo: Alexander Lawrie
