Edinburgh Royal Mile: Two people taken to hospital after flat fire near High Street

A fire in a flat on Canongate Road off Edinburgh’s Royal Mile has prompted a multi-agency response from the city’s emergency services with two people being taken to hospital.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene, at the lower end of the High Street, at around 4pm.

Two people have been taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary as a result of the blaze.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 3.38pm on Wednesday, February 24 to reports of a smell of burning coming from a property at Canongate, Edinburgh.“Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the scene where there was a fire in a flat of a four-storey building.

“Firefighters assisted two people from the flat and handed them into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service who took them to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

“Crews extinguished the fire and currently remain in attendance.”

Police confirmed that they are helping with traffic management, and said Canongate Road is currently closed as a result of the incident.

It is understood that a Police Incident Response Unit is also at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed to the Evening News that: “We received a call today at 3:58pm to attend an incident on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.

“We dispatched two ambulances and our special operations team to the scene.”
