Hamburg Place incident: Leith man charged after ‘terrifying attack’ on 82-year-old woman

A man from Leith has been arrested and charged with assault and robbery after an old age pensioner was left in hospital.

The 82-year-old woman suffered a broken hip and a head injury when she was reportedly attacked in Hamburg Place at 4:35pm on Monday, February 8.

Officers said the assailant hit her over the back of the head and snatched her handbag in a “terrifying attack”.

She was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment for her injuries, which were described as “serious”.

She has since been discharged.

Detectives in Edinburgh launched a widespread appeal for information about the attack, including local businesses with CCTV, and drivers with dash-cam footage.

Officers have now arrested and charged a 33-year-old man in connection with the incident.

Police Scotland said a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal, and the man is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday, February 18.
