Man charged for driving 102mph in East Lothian following spate of speeding offences

A man has been caught speeding 102mph on the A1 near a village in East Lothian.

The 29-year-old was charged after being stopped by officers at Gladsmuir on Sunday.

Police have dealt with a spate of speeding offences in the area over the last month.

Exactly one week before, a 28-year-old man was arrested for driving 98 mph in the same spot.

Officers managed to stop the driver during a road check on Sunday, May 24.

He was charged with the relevant driving offences and reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

A 31-year-old woman was charged for driving 95mph on the A1 near Gladsmuir on May 13 while a fourth driver, a man aged 21, was also arrested for speeding at 96 mph in the same area.

A police spokesman said: “On Sunday afternoon, officers conducted a static speed check at the same location.

“Six drivers were warned with regards their speed and manner of driving in line with Road Traffic legislation.

“Local community officers and East Lothian Community Action Team have also received numerous complaints in recent months relating to the speed of vehicles travelling on Beech Terrace, Pencaitland.

“In response to these complaints they gave the area attention over the weekend, with the deployment of the ‘pop up’ police officer on Saturday.

“Officers received positive feedback from local residents in relation to this action, stating they had noticed that it had made a difference to the speed of vehicles on the road.”
