Police seek more information in relation to mosque attack

Police are appealing for more information after Edinburgh's Central Mosque was involved in a fire-raising incident last weekend.

The religious building, on Potterrow, was targeted in the early hours of Sunday morning in an attack being treated as hate crime by police.

A bottle containing an ignited object was thrown at the mosque causing damage to its door and garden.

Officers are now looking to trace three women and a man who were in George Square, near to the Meadows at around 2am, shortly before the incident.

They are possibly of Asian appearance and are understood to have been involved in a verbal altercation with a man, who is believed to be responsible for the fire-raising.

The man, who is being treated as a suspect, is described as a white and in his late twenties.

He is described as around 5ft 10” in height, has a medium build and a shaved head.

He was wearing a dark checked shirt and black t-shirt with white writing underneath shortly before the incident.

Detective Inspector Grant Johnston said: “We are eager to trace the man and three women who were seen to have an verbal altercation with the suspect, as we believe they may be key witnesses who can further our inquiries.

“We are still following a positive line of inquiry, nevertheless we are still keen to speak to members of the public who have information or were in the area at the time.

“Anyone who believes they have information that can assist our investigation is asked to get in touch.”
