Police warning after rise in bogus calls from scammers

Police in the Lothians have issued a warning after a series of calls from scammers claiming to be from the tax office, NHS, or DWP.

Midlothian Police say there has been a rise in telephone, email and online scams, with some appearing to be plausible.

Officers say that if you are in any doubt end the call, and do not follow any instructions to move money or buy gift vouchers.

If you are contacted by email or text and suspect this is a scam. The following link can be used to report it and prevent others being scammed: www.ncsc.gov.uk/information/report-suspicious-emails.

If a crime has occurred, then call Police Scotland on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

Police Scotland say that reporting incidents assists oficers in tackling fraud and enables them to identify areas of concern and patterns of behaviour.

The information could be valuable and could lead to the prosecution of offenders and ensure the safety of the public.
