Reggae singer Finley Quaye denies racist street attack

CITY-BORN reggae star Finley Quaye has denied assaulting a woman in an alleged racially aggravated attack.

The 38-year-old singer appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday charged with striking Jobely Flores in Leith Walk in October 2011.

Quaye, of Britannia Street, London, pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that he repeatedly spat on her face and struck her on the head to her injury on October 8 last year.

Prosecutors say the alleged attack was aggravated by racial prejudice.

The singer wasn’t in court to hear his solicitor Cameron Tait enter the not guilty plea.

Quaye won a Brit Award for Best Male Solo Artist in 1998.

After hearing the plea being entered, Sheriff Roderick MacLeod fixed trial for the case on August 24.

The vocalist was ordered to appear at a preparatory hearing in Edinburgh Sheriff Court on the matter in July.
