Scammer targets son of missing Edinburgh mum in 'disgusting' attempt to get money

A scammer has targeted the son of a missing woman claiming they can reveal his mother’s whereabouts in return for thousands of dollars.

Elaine McArthur, 48, was last seen on Crewe Road North in Pilton at around 12.40pm on Saturday.

Her son, Harry, has appealed to the public for help to find her.

Yet today he shared screenshots of a message from an online scammer asking for $3,000 (about £2,500) in exchange for information on her whereabouts.

In the disturbing conversation the heartless troll says: “I found her.

“Just do as I say, if you truly want her back.

“Just send me $3,000 now.

“Then I will show where she is.”

The mystery account holder urges Harry to not call the police during their conversation.

The worried son said the scammer blocked him shortly after.

Scots have since reacted to Harry’s messages.

One twitter user said the behaviour was “disgusting” and another urged the man to report the online troll to the police.

Following the incident Harry said: “Hey everyone, I just want to reach out and thank everyone for their support so far.

“My family and friends really appreciate it, and we also appreciate the efforts of the police.

“However, in times like these, bad people show themselves up.”

Elaine McArthur, 48, was last seen around 12.40pm on Saturday afternoon (April 18) outside a shop on Crewe Road North.

She is white, 5ft 2in tall, slim build and has long blonde hair which is usually tied up.
